Hiring movers in Deptford NJ means hiring a crew that knows the township has no bulk trash day, that a house can’t change hands without a Certificate of Occupancy, that Route 42 at the mall is a different road at 4 p.m. than it is at 9 a.m., and that Steeplechase and Lakebridge have HOA rules the township doesn’t. Here is how we plan Deptford moves, what the township expects when you move out, and answers to common questions about moving in Deptford.

What We Plan Around on a Deptford Move

Route 42, Route 55, I-295, and the Mall

Deptford sits on one of the busiest interchanges in South Jersey, where Route 42, Route 55, and I-295 come together next to the Deptford Mall. That is good news for a moving truck most of the day, because almost every neighborhood is a few minutes from a highway, and bad news from mid-afternoon on, when the mall traffic and the shore-and-commuter traffic on 42 pile up together. Clements Bridge Road and Route 41 (Hurffville Road) through the retail strip are the slow spots. We build the traffic into our arrival time and, for moves near the mall, we start early.

Split-Levels, Ranches, and Full Basements

Most of Deptford’s housing is 1950s through 1990s: ranches and capes in Blackwood Terrace and Cooper Village, split-levels and colonials in Oak Valley, larger colonials in Bexhill Farms. Split-levels are the ones that surprise people. Every load goes up or down a half flight, the lower level usually has a low ceiling and a tight turn at the bottom of the stairs, and the garage is where the last decade of stuff lives. On the walkthrough we look at the stairs, the lower-level access, and the garage, because that is where the hours are.

Townhomes, 55+ Communities, and Apartments

Steeplechase is an HOA townhome community with assigned parking, Lakebridge is a 55+ community of ranch homes with its own rules, and the apartment complexes along Route 41, Clements Bridge Road, and Deptford Center Road are the ones most likely to want a certificate of insurance and a reserved loading window. Our trucks are 26-foot straight-body trucks and won’t fit in an assigned or guest space, so before move day we figure out the closest legal spot to your door. The farther the crew has to carry, the longer the job takes, and on an hourly move that shows up on the bill. Ask your management office as soon as your date is set and we send the COI straight to them. More on apartment moves in South Jersey.

Moving in Deptford Neighborhoods

Deptford is 17 square miles, and each part of the township changes how we plan the day:

  • Oak Valley: The biggest neighborhood in the township, colonials and split-levels from the 1970s through the 1990s with driveways and garages. Easy truck access; plan for the split-level stairs and the garage.
  • Blackwood Terrace and Cooper Village: Ranches and capes from the 1950s to 1980s on mature lots. Single-level moves go fast; we check for low branches before we back the truck in.
  • Bexhill Farms, Heritage Woods, and Country Club Estates: Larger and newer colonials. More rooms means a bigger crew and a longer day, and an in-home or video walkthrough gives you a much more accurate estimate.
  • Almonesson and the lake: Established homes near Almonesson Lake and Fasola Park, with narrower streets than the newer developments. We plan the truck placement ahead of time.
  • Jericho and the Route 55 side: Mature neighborhoods with the quickest access south on Route 55, popular with people moving in from Gloucester County towns farther out.
  • Steeplechase and Lakebridge: HOA townhomes and the 55+ community. Assigned parking, moving-hour rules, and often a downsizing move with a second stop at a family member’s house.
  • Woodbury Gardens, Woodbury Park, and the Woodbury Heights border: Smaller older homes on tighter lots where the township line runs down the block. If your move crosses into Woodbury or Woodbury Heights, the trash and inspection rules change at the line.

Downsizing From a Deptford Home

A lot of our Deptford calls are from families who bought in Oak Valley or Blackwood Terrace decades ago and are now moving to Lakebridge, a townhome, or closer to grandkids. Those moves have more decisions in them than boxes: what fits in the new place, what goes to the kids, what gets sold, and what goes to the curb. We break them into pieces (our senior moving services page covers how). We can deliver the keeper pieces to the new home, run a second load to a family member’s house, and haul the rest away during the same job. Our packing crew handles the china cabinet, the artwork, and the boxes you would rather not lift.

Because Deptford has no bulk trash day (see below), the haul-away matters more here than in most towns. If there is more than the township will take, we can carry it to the curb or a dumpster at our hourly rate, or take it to the landfill and add the disposal fee the landfill charges by weight.

Moving Between Philadelphia and Deptford

Deptford is about 12 miles from Center City by way of Route 42 and the Walt Whitman Bridge, and a lot of our Deptford customers are coming over from South Philly for a yard and a driveway. That move crosses a state line, which makes it an interstate move. Interstate household-goods movers need a USDOT number and operating authority from the FMCSA. Aron Movers holds both (USDOT 757960, MC 568794) along with our New Jersey license. Before you hire anyone for a Philly-to-Deptford move, look up their USDOT number and read our guide to moving company red flags.

Your Deptford Move-Out Checklist

Deptford’s trash rules are stricter than most people expect, and they catch people on the way out. Confirm details with Deptford Public Works at 856-579-4900 or on the township’s trash collection page.

  • There is no bulk trash day: Deptford’s code classifies furniture, appliances, and construction materials as bulky waste that the property owner is responsible for disposing of, and the township’s contractor, Suburban Disposal, runs regular trash Monday through Thursday with no separate bulk collection. Call Public Works before you put a couch at the curb.
  • Regular trash: Containers up to 35 gallons and 50 pounds with a tight lid, or tied bags, at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day and no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before. Concrete, dirt, brick, tires, logs, and stumps are never collected.
  • Clean-outs are on you: The township says plainly that rental house clean-outs will not be picked up by the contractor and are the owner’s responsibility, and that contractor debris has to be removed by the company doing the work. Small DIY repair scraps are the exception, cut to 4-foot lengths, bundled, and under 50 pounds.
  • Appliances and metal: Public Works picks up metal appliances by request. Call 856-228-4719 with your address, and secure or remove the doors before it goes to the curb.
  • Electronics: TVs, computers, and e-waste go to the Public Works yard at 1702 Hurffville Road, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Selling your home? Deptford’s code requires a Certificate of Occupancy when a home is sold, and it won’t issue until smoke and heat detectors are in compliance. Details in the next section.
  • Too much for the curb? In Deptford, that’s most of it. We can clear out unwanted furniture and junk during your move. Carrying it to the curb or a dumpster is billed at our hourly rate. If it needs to go to the landfill, we add the disposal fee the landfill charges by weight.

Selling in Deptford? The Certificate of Occupancy Comes First

Chapter 10 of the Deptford Township code says that every building or dwelling unit sold in the township has to be in compliance with its housing standards, and that no Certificate of Occupancy will issue until that compliance is demonstrated. The seller is responsible for the smoke and heat detectors. The same rule applies when a rental changes tenants, with the landlord responsible. Here is how to keep it from holding up your closing:

  • Apply early: The CO application goes through the township Construction Office at the municipal building on Cooper Street. Get it in as soon as you have a closing date, not the week of.
  • Detectors first: A working smoke detector on every level and near the bedrooms, and a carbon monoxide detector near the sleeping areas if you have gas appliances, a fireplace, or an attached garage. Battery units should be 10-year sealed. Swap them before the inspector shows up, not after.
  • Fire extinguisher and house numbers: Not spelled out in Deptford’s chapter, but a charged ABC extinguisher near the kitchen and 3-inch house numbers visible from the street are what every inspector in South Jersey looks for, and together they cost about $30 at a hardware store.
  • Unpermitted work: The CO inspection is a compliance check, so a finished basement, deck, or shed that never got a permit can surface here. If you added anything without a permit, ask the Construction Office how to close it out before you list.

Deptford Moving FAQs

Does Deptford pick up furniture at the curb?

Not on a schedule. Deptford has no bulk trash day, and the township code puts furniture, appliances, and construction materials in the “bulky waste” category that the owner is responsible for disposing of. The trash contractor also won’t take rental clean-outs. Call Public Works at 856-579-4900 before you put anything large at the curb, or have us haul it away during your move.

How do I get rid of a refrigerator or washer in Deptford?

Public Works picks up metal appliances by request. Call 856-228-4719 with your address, and secure or remove the doors before it goes to the curb. TVs and electronics go to the Public Works yard at 1702 Hurffville Road between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. If the timing doesn’t work, we can take it away during the move.

Do I need a certificate of occupancy to sell my house in Deptford?

Yes. Deptford’s code requires that any home sold in the township meet its housing standards, and no Certificate of Occupancy issues until that’s demonstrated, with the seller responsible for the smoke and heat detectors. Apply through the township Construction Office as soon as you have a closing date, and put fresh 10-year smoke detectors on every level before the inspector comes.

What’s the best time of day to move near the Deptford Mall?

Morning. Route 42, Route 55, and I-295 all come together next to the mall, and from mid-afternoon on, the mall traffic and the commuter and shore traffic on 42 stack up. Clements Bridge Road and Route 41 through the retail strip are the slow spots. For moves near the mall we start early so the truck is loaded before the roads fill up.

Is moving from Philadelphia to Deptford a local move?

No. Even though it is only about 12 miles over the Walt Whitman Bridge, a move between Philadelphia and Deptford crosses a state line, so it is an interstate move. The mover needs a USDOT number and FMCSA operating authority. Aron Movers is USDOT 757960 and MC 568794, and we also hold NJ License #39PM00033600.

How much do movers in Deptford NJ cost?

Local moves in Deptford are billed by the hour, so the cost depends on crew size, how much you are moving, and access at both homes. A split-level with a full lower level and garage takes longer than the square footage suggests, which is why we recommend an in-home or video walkthrough. New Jersey requires movers to give you a written estimate at least 24 hours before the move. See our South Jersey moving costs guide for typical ranges, or call (856) 854-1993 for a free quote.
